The Springfield Free Public Library will host a Monday evening Canasta Club. The intention of the club is bring together people who already know how to play canasta and who are looking for others interested in playing on a regular basis. The library will provide the space and the card tables, but participants will need to bring their own decks of cards.
Canasta was developed in Montevideo, Uruguay in 1939 and became extremely popular in some parts of South America before being introduced to the United States in 1948. It is played with two decks of cards and is the only member of the rummy family of card games that is played with a partner.
